Muzaffar Ali on Hindi film ‘Umrao Jaan’: The culture of courtesan inspired a lot of poets
Muzaffar Ali speaks about Hindi film ‘Umrao Jaan’. He says, “In my own experience, I had to bring her as an expression of my own creativity and I had to chart out an evolution of a girl who is totally helpless in this world and how she evolves, what are her shades what kind of relationship she encounters, how she looks at society how that shapes her mind, how she comes to term her disillusionment. The culture of the courtesan had to be looked at a totally different way it has to be looked at as a kind of a valid artistic institution not just as a flesh trade but as a place where people used to send their children for education and learning conversation and humor and things like that. The culture of the courtesan inspires a lot of poets, a lot of writers.”
